Comforts of Home

People “come home” for many comforting life moments—holiday gatherings, Sunday family dinners, welcoming a new family member, celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings, and family reunions. Whatever the occasion, the feeling of being at home is at the heart of these memories.

But what does “at home” really mean?

Relaxed. At ease. At peace. Comfortable.

Now imagine feeling that way every day, not just during special occasions.

What does it take to feel “at home” in your everyday life?

Decluttering.

I know—just the word can feel stressful. We hear “declutter” and instantly think:

   •   I don’t have TIME to pull everything out of that overstuffed closet.

   •   TIME to sort those “I have no idea what’s in here” drawers.

   •   TIME to go through the kids’ toys and remove what they’ve long outgrown.

   •   TIME to box up donations and actually take them somewhere.

At Shelf-Esteem Organizers, whether a client hires us for a full-home overhaul or joins one of our monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly maintenance memberships, we always encourage consistent decluttering.

Because consistency is key.

We move through different seasons in life—and we outgrow things along the way:

   •   Kids’ clothing and toys

   •   Styles and trends

   •   Hobbies we’ve moved on from

   •   Duplicates we forgot we had

   •   Kitchen gadgets we never use

   •   Decor that no longer fits our taste

When we don’t deal with these changes consistently, those unused items get shoved into closets, garages, and spare rooms. Over time, they create mental and physical overwhelm that affects our day-to-day thoughts, time, and routines.

How often do you declutter?

Are you like many people who declutter only twice a year—spring cleaning and holiday prep?

Do you wait for a “perfect” weekend when the weather is nice, the kids are out of the house, and you’re mentally ready?

Do you feel the holiday panic when it’s time to pull out the Thanksgiving or Christmas decor and you’re sorting through what’s broken, outdated, or no longer your style?

Do you host guests and frantically try to clear space in spare-room closets that became a catch-all all year long?

Do you ever worry you don’t have room for what’s coming into your home during the holidays?

You’re not alone.

Small, consistent steps reduce overwhelm.

After we help a client downsize, settle into a new home, or reset their space after years of buildup, we always recommend placing a donation box in a central location. But to really optimize the process, we suggest a donation bin “labeled” in every major area.

Here’s why…

The Donation Bin: Your Built-In Decluttering Partner

When I try on a piece of clothing and it doesn’t fit how I want, I can toss it straight into the donation bin—not hang it back up where it takes physical, mental, and emotional space. Instead of telling myself:

   •   “I need to lose weight,” or

   •   “Maybe I should try selling this…”

I give myself a gift—the gift of releasing stress, guilt, and clutter.

Once the bin is full, I toss it in my car and drop it off whenever I’m passing a donation site. No massive “decluttering day.” No procrastination. Just simple, steady progress.

You can make this even easier with a dedicated bin—like this one

—that blends seamlessly into your space.

Children’s Clothing: A System That Works

A few labeled bins can make kids’ clothing effortless:

   •   “Too Small” Bin – Items they’ve just outgrown (decide later whether to donate or save for the next sibling).

   •   “Too Big” Bin – Gifts from grandparents or friends that they’ll grow into.

This system allows kids to naturally participate as they grow.

Not Your Typical Toy Rotation: A Quiet Decluttering Hero

When I lived almost an hour from my daughter Christie, we created a toy rotation system. She would bring me toys the kids weren’t using regularly—still great toys but ones they’d forgotten about. When they visited, those toys felt “new” again.

No guilt. No constant decisions. Just smart rotation.

And this can easily be done with cousins, grandparents, or close family friends.

A “Return To…” Bin

Another powerful tool:

Place a clearly labeled “Return to ____” bin, bag, or box near the front door.

Use it for:

   •   Items borrowed from friends

   •   School or church items that need to go back

   •   Things that belong in the car

   •   Items someone left at your house

   •   Amazon returns and store-bought purchases that didn’t work out

This keeps return items from piling up on the kitchen counter, getting lost in the shuffle, or riding around in the back seat for weeks. A simple bin means everything you need to return stays in one place—and actually gets returned.
